When Polyaspartic Floor Coating Makes Sense
Polyaspartic floor coating is a type of polyurea built for concrete. It cures much faster than standard epoxy, resists UV light, and can be applied across a wider temperature range. For Lafayette homeowners that means a garage floor done in a day, a floor that does not yellow where sunlight hits it, and more workable days on the calendar in spring and fall.
Faster cure, shorter wait
Bob Vila's polyaspartic guide reports that polyaspartic floors can usually take foot traffic after 3 to 4 hours and vehicles after about 24 hours. Epoxy needs about 12 hours before walking and around three days before parking. HomeGuide gives a full cure of 24 to 48 hours for polyaspartic and up to a week for epoxy. If you have one garage and two cars that need it in winter, that difference matters.
Cooler-weather work
HomeGuide lists epoxy's application window as 60°F to 85°F and polyaspartic's as -30°F to 140°F. Lafayette's average January low is 17.7°F at the Lafayette 8 S station, and spring and fall bring cool nights even when afternoons are mild. Polyaspartic gives us more days we can work in an unheated garage. We still check slab temperature and humidity on install day, because the product label sets the limits and a cold slab slows any cure.
Sunlight and color
HomeGuide rates polyaspartic UV resistance as excellent and epoxy as poor to fair. Bob Vila notes that polyaspartic will not yellow or fade over time, while epoxy can. That matters for garages with the door open on summer evenings, sunrooms, covered porches and any floor near big windows. Lafayette's average July high is 83.6°F, and long summer days put a lot of sun on a floor.
How we use it
There are two common ways to install polyaspartic. In a full polyaspartic system, every coat is polyaspartic, which gives the fastest turnaround. In a hybrid system, we use an epoxy base coat for its thickness and bond, broadcast flakes into it, and finish with a polyaspartic topcoat for UV and abrasion resistance. HomeGuide notes that polyaspartic goes on at 2 to 6 mils per coat compared with 10 to 20 mils for epoxy, so on rough or older slabs a thicker epoxy base can level the surface better. We pick between the two after we see the floor.
Prep still decides how long it lasts
A fast cure does not make up for poor prep. Polyaspartic sets up quickly, which leaves less time to work and less room for errors. We diamond grind the full slab, vacuum it, and fill cracks, pits and joints before the first coat. HomeGuide also notes that polyaspartic is not a DIY-friendly product because of its short working time. Oil-soaked spots get degreased, and any old paint or coating comes off first.
Where polyaspartic fits
- Garages where you need to park again the next day
- Garages with a sunny opening or a door that stays up
- Fall, winter and early spring installs
- Covered porches and breezeways
- Commercial spaces that cannot close for long
- Topcoats over epoxy flake floors
Things to know
Polyaspartic costs more per square foot than epoxy. HomeGuide's range is $5 to $12 per square foot compared with $4 to $10 for epoxy. It is also thinner per coat, so it relies on a well-prepared, fairly flat slab. If your floor has deep pitting, we fill it first or use a thicker epoxy base under the polyaspartic topcoat.
What This Covers

Typical Polyaspartic Floor Coating Costs
| Item | Published range |
|---|---|
| Installed polyaspartic, per sq ft (HomeGuide) | $5 to $12 |
| Installed polyaspartic, per sq ft (Bob Vila) | $4 to $9 |
| One-car garage | $1,400 to $4,700 |
| Two-car garage | $2,000 to $6,900 |
| Three-car garage | $2,900 to $10,400 |
| Moisture and hardness testing | $50 to $300 |
National ranges from HomeGuide's polyaspartic cost guide and Bob Vila. We include a moisture test with every estimate. Lafayette prices can differ, and the condition of your slab and the system you choose change the total. Your written estimate is the price.
How It Works
1. Estimate and test
We measure, test moisture and check slab condition and temperature.
2. Grind and repair
The slab is ground, vacuumed and patched.
3. Apply
Base, optional flakes and topcoat go down, often in a single day.
4. Return to use
Walk on it in hours and park after about a day, depending on temperature.

Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy for a garage?
It depends on the floor. Polyaspartic cures faster, resists UV and can be applied in colder weather. Epoxy builds thicker per coat and costs less. Many garages get both: an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat.
How much does polyaspartic floor coating cost?
HomeGuide lists $5 to $12 per square foot installed, or about $2,000 to $6,900 for a two-car garage. Bob Vila gives $4 to $9 per square foot. Prep and repairs add to that, and your written estimate sets the price.
Can polyaspartic be installed in winter in Indiana?
Often, yes. HomeGuide lists polyaspartic's application range as -30°F to 140°F. We still check slab temperature and the product label on the day, and we may heat the space.
Does polyaspartic yellow in the sun?
HomeGuide rates its UV resistance as excellent, and Bob Vila says it will not yellow or fade over time. That is why we use it as the topcoat on sunny garage floors.
