Old Outbuildings, New Floors

Epoxy flooring in Oxford often goes into a building that was not first built as a garage. Oxford is Benton County's first town. It was established in 1843 and went by Milroy and then Hartford before it took its current name that December. The town's most famous resident was born in a barn: the pacer Dan Patch was foaled in an Oxford barn on April 29, 1896. Barns, sheds and old outbuildings are part of daily life here, and many now hold cars, tools or a workshop.

Turning an outbuilding into a usable space

When someone wants to coat an older outbuilding, we look at the floor before we talk about color.

  • Is there a full concrete slab, or partial slabs poured at different times?
  • Are there wide cracks or broken edges where equipment has rolled for years?
  • Is the floor damp near the doors or low corners?
  • Is there old paint, oil or sealer on the surface?

Our Concrete Crack & Floor Repair work handles broken edges, cracks and joints between old pours. We grind the whole slab so the coating bonds evenly. If a floor is dirt or gravel, it needs new concrete before we can help, and we will say so.

Which system fits

  • Shop & Commercial Floor Epoxy for a workshop or equipment space with heavy loads and fluids.
  • Epoxy Flake Floors for a converted building used as a garage, gym or hobby room. The chips hide dust and add grip.
  • Polyaspartic Floor Coating when you need the space back quickly.

Ground that slopes toward Big Pine Creek

Oxford sits on mostly open farmland that slopes gently southeast toward Big Pine Creek, at about 735 feet. Water on a gentle slope can collect against the uphill side of a building and soak into the slab. Before we coat any Oxford floor, especially a basement or an older outbuilding, we run a moisture test. A higher reading gets a moisture-tolerant primer. Visible water coming through means drainage needs attention first.

Homes in a former county seat

Oxford was the Benton County seat until 1874, when the seat moved to Fowler, about 9 miles north. Some of the town's buildings date from that period. The David S. Heath House and the Presbyterian Church Building are both on the National Register of Historic Places. Older homes like these can have basements and garages with uneven, patched floors. We fix those first, then apply Basement Floor Epoxy or Garage Floor Epoxy over the sound surface.

Garages attached to farm homes

Many Oxford houses have an attached garage that doubles as a mudroom during planting and harvest. Boots and tires bring in field dirt along with winter salt from State Roads 55 and 352. An Epoxy Flake Floor with a textured topcoat holds up to that traffic and cleans with a hose and squeegee. We grind and coat the step edge into the house too, since that is where wear shows first.

Planning around Dan Patch Days

The town still honors Dan Patch with its annual Dan Patch Days festival. If you plan to use your garage or shop for that weekend, tell us the date at the estimate. We will schedule the install so the floor has time to cure.

Oxford Questions

Can you coat an old barn or shed floor?

If it has a sound concrete slab, usually yes. We grind it, repair cracks and joints between old pours, and test for moisture. Dirt, gravel or badly broken concrete needs new concrete first.

What finish works for a converted outbuilding used as a gym or hobby room?

An Epoxy Flake Floor is a good fit. It hides dust, adds grip and cleans up easily.

Do you test for moisture on every Oxford job?

Yes. We test every slab before we choose a primer, and we will tell you if water needs to be dealt with before coating.
